Series R

This series of paintings evokes the detritus of loss, deterioration, and erasure. They emerged out of a serious experimentation with a resist process. I build up layers of visual information and then work to unveil what I buried, like an archeological dig. For me the most interesting aspect of the process is relinquishing control. What survives the aggressive removal process is unexpected. The final piece surprises me. The erosion of the paint simultaneously records and alludes to the transitory nature of time. The idea of temporality in the work also intrigues, like the fleeting visual pleasure of the ever-evolving public kiosk or graffiti before it is expunged.
